- Co-Investment
- A minority investment made directly into an operating company alongside a financial sponsor or lead investor. Used heavily by GIC and ADIA to deploy capital without paying standard GP fees.
- Denominator Effect
- A phenomenon where the value of one portion of a portfolio (e.g., public equities) decreases rapidly, causing illiquid assets (e.g., real estate) to suddenly represent a larger percentage of the total portfolio than permitted by the fund's mandate. See our Q1 2024 Report.
- Giga-Project
- A massive scale domestic infrastructure or real estate development. Most commonly associated with Saudi PIF's mandate to execute Vision 2030 (e.g., NEOM, Red Sea Global).
- Santiago Principles
- A voluntary set of 24 guidelines designed to promote good governance, accountability, and transparency for sovereign wealth funds. While Norway's GPFG adheres strictly, compliance among other state funds varies wildly. Our methodology tracks adherence.
- Sovereign Premium
- The informal markup or valuation premium that founders or GPs attempt to charge when they know a sovereign wealth fund (with theoretically infinite capital) is participating in a funding round. Funds often use shell companies to hide their involvement to avoid this.
